چکیده

Many morphogenetic processes are accomplished by coordinated cell rearrangements. These rearrangements are accompanied by substantial shifts in the neighbor relationships between cells. Here we propose a model for studying morphogenesis in epithelial sheets by directed cell neighbor change. Our model describes cell rearrangements by accounting for the balance of forces between neighboring cells within an epithelium. Cell rearrangement and cell shape changes occur when these forces are not in mechanical equilibrium. We will show that cell rearrangement within the epidermal enveloping layer (EVL) of the teleost fish Fundulus during epiboly can be explained solely in terms of the balance of forces generated among constituent epithelial cells.

The Epithelial Cell Adhesion Molecule EpCAM Is Required for Epithelial Morphogenesis and Integrity during Zebrafish Epiboly and Skin Development

The aberrant expression of the transmembrane protein EpCAM is associated with tumor progression, affecting different cellular processes such as cell-cell adhesion, migration, proliferation, differentiation, signaling, and invasion. However, the in vivo function of EpCAM still remains elusive due to the lack of genetic loss-of-function studies. Here, we describe epcam (tacstd) null mutants in ze...

Coordinated cell-shape changes control epithelial movement in zebrafish and Drosophila.

Epithelial morphogenesis depends on coordinated changes in cell shape, a process that is still poorly understood. During zebrafish epiboly and Drosophila dorsal closure, cell-shape changes at the epithelial margin are of critical importance. Here evidence is provided for a conserved mechanism of local actin and myosin 2 recruitment during theses events. It was found that during epiboly of the z...

Spindle Position in Symmetric Cell Divisions during Epiboly Is Controlled by Opposing and Dynamic Apicobasal Forces

Orientation of cell division is a vital aspect of tissue morphogenesis and growth. Asymmetric divisions generate cell fate diversity and epithelial stratification, whereas symmetric divisions contribute to tissue growth, spreading, and elongation. Here, we describe a mechanism for positioning the spindle in symmetric cell divisions of an embryonic epithelium. We show that during the early stage...

Surface Specializations of Fundulus Cells and Their Relation to Cell Movements during Gastrulation

Cell movements in Fundulus blastoderms during gastrulation were studied utilizing time-lapse cinemicrography and electron microscopy. Time-lapse films reveal that cells of the enveloping layer undulate and sometimes separate briefly but remain together in a cohesive layer. During epiboly, the marginal enveloping layer cells move over the periblast as it expands over the yolk sphere. Movement oc...
